Located just 15 miles south of Sacramento, Elk Grove was founded in 1850 along a stage coach route. The city's proximity to Sutter's Fort, the epicenter for the California Gold Rush, provided an influx of gold miners during its early days. The area remained mostly farmland until the 1980s, and Elk Grove was ultimately incorporated as a city in 2000. Today it is the second largest city in the Sacramento region. Agriculture was an early industry here and remains strong, along with high technology, professional service, and commercial and retail enterprises. Today's top employers in the region include the local unified school district, Apple® and Kaiser Permanente®.
