How long is the homebuilding process?

We know how exciting it is to watch your new home being built from the ground up, and your vision of home become a reality. So, we broke down the big picture to give you a better idea what to expect from your construction timeline. Keep in mind that on average, it takes approximately five to eight months for a new KB home to be built.

If this is your first home purchase or you’ve never built a new home before, you naturally have lots of questions. We are here to inform and reassure, so you can enjoy your homebuying journey. Let’s get started.

When does construction begin after I choose my floor plan?

Before we can break ground on construction, we have to finalize a few important things. Generally, these steps take 30 to 50 days from start to finish. The essential first step? Completing your mortgage loan. Once certain documents are approved, you get the green light to move forward.

Another big step is personalizing your new home at the KB Home Design Studio®. This creative process takes time, consideration and collaboration. With lots of exciting decisions to be made, your selections must be finalized before we start the build.

Permit approval from local jurisdictions is also a big deal. KB Home does all we can to keep every process and procedure on track, at every level.

Once construction is handed off to the construction team, the cycle times in each market are very predictable. And that means your personalized new KB home is well on its way!

Are there factors that can affect the building time?

The simple answer is yes, there are some basic things that can impact the construction schedule. For instance, certain regions experience rainy seasons or freezing temperatures, weather conditions that can affect the time frame.

We absolutely understand that buying a new home is a wonderful experience, but it can also feel like… a lot. Your KB Home sales counselor will keep you updated with important news, so you always know what is happening.

How will I know if the build is on schedule?

We are big on communicating, and do lots of it. Your KB Home sales counselor will give you a detailed overview of the entire process early on. This helps set realistic expectations, so you have an accurate idea what to anticipate moving forward. If we encounter unexpected challenges or delays, we promptly let you know, and adjust accordingly.

Once again, we can’t emphasize this enough. Any question that is important to you, is important to us. Call, email, or visit your KB Home sales office. And ask away!

How often will I hear from you?

Your dedicated sales counselor and construction superintendent will personally contact you once a week with a status report.

Our homes are personalized and uniquely built for you. And that requires coordination and oversight between departments. We don’t just directly communicate with you, our teams are in sync with each other. Your dedicated sales counselor, Design Studio consultant, construction team, warranty and mortgage teams maintain a constant flow of information, so your build is on schedule, and on track.

Do I meet with the construction superintendent?

Our on-site staff is ready to answer any questions you may have, alleviate any concerns, or have a friendly chat. Naturally, that includes the construction superintendent, who oversees every aspect of the process.

Our new community sites are often buzzing with customers who like to stop by after work to see their home as it’s being built from the ground up. Someone from the KB Home team is always on the property weekdays during regular business hours to greet you or provide a status update.

Remember, we are here for you, and look forward to saying hello!

Are there milestones to know my home is on schedule?

There are multiple stages where you have one-on-one, pre-set meetings to keep you informed. Two of the most important are the pre-drywall orientation and homeowner orientation.

Without a doubt, personalizing your floor plan is one of the most exciting parts about your homebuying process. The pre-drywall orientation is your opportunity to confirm that all of the options you selected from the KB Home Design Studio are exactly what you ordered. Once you are completely satisfied with the pre-drywall orientation, the next stage of building gets the green light.

The thrill of move-in day is getting closer, and it’s time for your homeowner orientation. From air conditioning to appliances, this meeting means your home is complete. A member of the construction or customer service team demonstrates all of your home’s fully-functioning features, so you understand how everything works before you get the keys.

How can a homebuyer help keep the process moving along?

The foundation of KB Home is built on relationships and that includes engagement and communication. We encourage you to ask questions, stay involved, and know that you have a trusted partner every step of the way.
