Welcome to Universal City

You can find this picturesque suburb 15 miles northeast of San Antonio in what used to be farmland. The area was developed to support Randolph Field - now Randolph Air Force Base - which opened in 1931. After the Base acquired the Headquarters for Air Training Command in 1957, the surrounding city exploded in growth. Today Universal City stretches just under six square miles and is dotted with quaint parks, including Red Horse Park, Veteran's Memorial Park, Pickrell Park and Crescent Bend Nature Park, just to name a few. This charming town hosts lots of family-friendly events, including an annual Snowfest & Carnival in February that features faux snow courtesy of an ice chipper, and a Veteran's Day Parade in November. A few more areas of local interest that are worth noting include:

  • Warbler Woods. This privately-owned bird and wildlife refuge spans 124 acres, with an open grassland, woodlands, ponds, roads, trails and Native American artifacts. Free to visitors.
  • Olympia Hills. This nearby golf club features an 18-hole course and a practice center with full length driving range, sculpted target greens and 10,000 sq. ft. short game area.
