One of the many advantages of having tile floors is the maintenance factor; tile is easier to clean than other flooring surfaces, especially when sealed correctly.
If not sealed correctly, the grout can soak up stains and leave your living space looking less than pleasant. There are stain resistant grouts available to help with this, but regular cleaning will still be necessary to maintain long lasting tiles.
Depending on the type of tile you have, there are different techniques and guidelines to follow when cleaning your floors. Natural stone products, for example, are porous by nature and require a different maintenance program than traditional ceramic tile. To keep your tile floors looking their best, always make sure to follow the guidelines provided by your tile manufacturer.
We asked our friends over at Emser Tile® for some basic tips on tile care maintenance. Here is what they had to say:
How do you keep [tile floors] clean? -To maintain the cleanliness of the tile, sweep regularly and wash as needed (weekly).
Are there certain tiles that are easier to maintain than others? – Smooth glazed surfaces are easier to maintain than textured or unglazed. Very light [in color] tiles by a high traffic area will need to be cleaned more regularly.
Helpful tip: STAY AWAY FROM BLEACH. People use it all the time to get their grout white and end up making matters worse. Cracks in grout can lead to water damage so be sure to seal your grout – and don’t use chemicals and you won’t have to try so hard to keep it clean.
So what should you use to clean [tile]? -The ideal products to use for tile care maintenance would be ph. neutral cleaners or tile specific cleaners. Overall, the cleanliness of tile is very easy to maintain, it’s the grout that can be difficult.
So there you have it! Thanks to Emser Tile for giving us these great maintenance tips to keep our tile floors in tip-top shape.
