There are loads of reasons why we should all be saving energy – from helping the planet to saving thousands of dollars a year on heating, cooling, appliances, and lighting.
Here are 5 things that you could do to save even more on your energy bills:
1. Turn Things Off
Yeah, yeah, we’ve all been hearing it since we were kids – turn off the lights when you leave the room. But this goes beyond lights – we should also be turning off and/or unplugging appliances when they’re not in use. To make it easier, plug multiple devices into a power strip. One flip of a switch turns them all off at once. In addition, you could save up to $50 a year just by enabling your computer to “sleep” when not in use.
2. Moderate Your Thermostat
The less you’re cooling or heating, the more energy (and money) you’re conserving. That means letting your home be a little cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer. What’s more, you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply adjusting your thermostat by 7°-10°F while you are away from your home.
3. Fill ‘Em Up
Whenever possible, try not to run the dishwasher or the washing machine with a mini-load. Wait until they’re full before you start and you could cut your laundry and dishwashing energy. After all, half a load uses the same amount of energy as a full one.
4. When in Doubt, Look for the ENERGY STAR
It is the standard of energy efficiency by the Department of Energy and can be found on a wide range of consumer products and appliances.
ENERGY STAR helps families and businesses save up on their utility bills while producing a positive impact on the environment. KB Home is a proud partner of ENERGY STAR – in fact, we have built 128,000+ ENERGY STAR certified homes since 2000.
