DALLAS, ARLINGTON, Texas, LOS ANGELES,
MIAMI, REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., and BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., May
4, 2000 (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?198872)
Centex Corporation (NYSE: CTX), D.R.
Horton, Inc. (NYSE: DHI), Encore Venture Partners, L.P., Kaufman
and Broad Home Corporation (NYSE: KBH), Lennar Corporation (NYSE:
LEN), Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL), and Pulte Corporation (NYSE:
PHM), today announced their intent to create a joint venture called
HomebuildersXchange, an independent company which plans to offer
the first worldwide homebuilding exchange for online commerce, collaboration,
and supply chain services. The goal is to make the exchange a primary
source for direct and indirect procurement of materials and labor
for the founding partners, other homebuilders, trade contractors,
distributors, wholesalers and manufacturers.
The new online exchange would be powered
by Oracles leading B2B exchange platform and technology, which
will provide contract and spot buying, online auctioning and reverse
auctioning. The exchange would be designed to facilitate collaborative
supply chain planning functionality allowing accurate capacity and
demand planning for participating trade contractors, distributors,
wholesalers and manufacturers. Planned future products include hand-held
wireless functionality, hosted job cost management, hosted sales
force automation and other value added services for the building
industry. Oracle would provide the technology, functionality and
hosting platform.
Participants would be able to buy, sell,
or trade goods and services on HomebuildersXchange using standard
web browsers. It is anticipated that the exchange will create significant
value for its participants by eliminating inefficiencies that exist
in the builder supply chain. The exchange would provide a more efficient
procurement and scheduling process, which is expected to reduce
purchase, fulfillment and construction cycles, administrative expenses,
inventory levels, and transaction costs.
HomebuildersXchange, scheduled to go
online this summer, should revolutionize the supply chain in the
highly fragmented $200 billion plus U.S. homebuilding industry.
Suppliers, distributors, trade contractors and builders will be
linked through a communications platform that will bring efficiencies
to every participant in the construction process. This system will
enable builders to increase the quality while reducing the cost
and time that it takes to build a home. The ultimate beneficiary
of the creation of HomebuildersXchange will be the homebuyer.
Donald R. Horton, Chairman of D.R. Horton,
Inc., said, "The formation of HomebuildersXchange is a significant
event highlighting the builders commitment to transitioning the
industry into the new economy. It will forever redefine the supply-chain
process, increase collaboration with subcontractors and suppliers,
and reduce supply-chain and administrative costs. We are delighted
to be partners with Oracle, the leader in e-business, and the other
founding builders."
Tim Eller, Chairman of Centex Homes
said, "Homebuilding is a business that will be able to take maximum
advantage of the dramatic changes that supply chain management will
bring to American industry. The founding partners are dedicated
to working with Oracle and all of the companies that contribute
to the building of a home to make HomebuildersXchange a success."
Ray Lane, President and COO, Oracle
Corp., said, "The leaders of the homebuilding industry have recognized
that networking their supply chain over the Internet can drive significantly
more value to their shareholders. Oracle is proud to be part of
this effort. Working with our HomebuildersXchange partners, we will
rapidly attain increased savings from inventory reduction and purchasing
efficiency for the industry.
Richard Beckwitt, General Partner of
Encore Venture Partners, LP, said, "It has been a pleasure working
with the nations largest builders and the worlds leading technology
company in creating this exchange. HomebuildersXchange will improve
the efficiency in the construction and procurement process and will
provide real-time interaction and information needed by the supply
chain to respond to market demands in the new economy. The exchange
will be operated as a comprehensive, open-electronic marketplace
available to all industry participants."
Oracles electronic marketplace solution
is already being adopted by some of the worlds leading B2B online
exchanges. Oracle is working with Ford Motor Company, General Motors
and DaimlerChrysler on the leading automotive industry exchange;
GlobalNetXchange, a global retail exchange that intends to use Oracle
and initially focus on the combined US$80 billion supply chain purchases
of global retail leaders Carrefour and Sears; and RetailersMarketXchange,
a new electronic marketplace is being established by Chevron, McLane
and Oracle for the US$200 billion convenience store industry in
the US. Additionally, several regional exchanges have also chosen
Oracle to provide the technology, functionality and hosting platform
for their online marketplaces.
