CISD: A Place
Where Ideas Grow ......
 |
Victor Martinez, a
senior at Lehman High School, will read his
college/scholarship application essay at the annual State of
Education luncheon of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce
on Dec. 9. Victor's essay, "Tomorrow's Future Rooted in
Our Community," won among a significant number of
college/scholarship application essays by students of Bastrop,
Del Valle, Manor, Dripping Springs, Eanes and Austin school
districts.
"This is an amazing honor," said Charlotte Winkelman,
Hays CISD Director of Counseling and College Readiness, who
submitted Victor's essay. "As in years past, the Chamber
will hire someone to coach Victor how to read his essay to the
public. The audience will include representatives from major
universities and corporations, who will witness Victor's work.
There is a great deal of notoriety involved."
Victor, a semifinalist for National Merit Scholar, has also
earned Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction for
performance on his Advanced Placement exams.
Anthony O. Befi, vice president of High Performance Computing
System Development and IBM Senior Location Executive for
Texas, will be the keynote speaker at the Austin Chamber
luncheon at the Frank Erwin Center.

Third-graders from
Fuentes Elementary School participated in a Mock City
Council meeting at Kyle City Hall last Tuesday, a
culmination of the three-year-old partnership between the
school district and City of Kyle designed to give students
a hands-on learning experience about how municipal
government works. Earlier in the month, all 3rd Grade
students at Fuentes Elementary received a special
presentation in their school to introduce them to the
various City departments and the council-manager form of
government. The students, who would serve as council
members--Fuentes' 3rd Grade Student Council--created their
own agenda for the meeting. At the meeting, the mock
council approved: improving the crosswalks by their
school, adding improvements to Steeplechase Park, and
support of the PAWS Animal Shelter. Following the meeting,
students were given a tour of Kyle City Hall, Kyle Pool
and Gregg/Clarke Park.
