City of Stone Mountain

Historic Properties

The Stone Mountain Inn, constructed circa 1910, is an important twentieth-century landmark.  It is a two story brick building built in the shop-house mode; the first floor was set aside as public space while the second floor embraced the hotel rooms.  At that time the inn featured a two story wrap-around porch and balcony.  Turned posts and brackets acted as main porch supports while the second floor boasted a small balustrade with turned balusters.  The inn’s sign was appropriately placed on the porch to invite railroad visitors.  The first floor featured a storefront with transoms over display windows while the second floor piercing consisted of single arched windows on the façade and on the Manor Street frontage.  Three sets of double doors allowed entry to the first floor, another pair was centered on the second floor opening on the balcony.  A single door is barely visible on the Manor Street side.  Town residents remember that this door was used by quarry workers and travelers in need of a bath and shave.

Today, the building houses the Stone Mountain General Store and Swan Gallery.  It has changed since it was built but one can still see the historical features still present today.  The original staircase inside has since been removed and filled in but upstairs still has the original room configurations and numbers over the doors when it was the Stone Mountain Inn.  The historical plastered walls and wood flooring are still present today giving one an historical record of how the  building was built around that time.
