Inspections may lower premiums
Many people who have experienced high premiums for their homeowners insurance may be able to qualify for discounts through the "My Safe Florida Home Program."
Although this program has been in effect for more than a year, there were several modifications during the 2008 legislative session. Most of the provisions in the new law are effective July 1.
The intent of the safe home program is to provide free home inspections for at least 400,000 site-built, single-family residential properties and provide grants to at least 35,000 applicants prior to June 30, 2009. This is an expansion of the previous legislation. The inspections are to be done by state certified private vendors. The usual cost of the inspections is $125 to $150. Under this program, they are free.
The legislation requires the Department of Financial Services to adopt a "quality assurance program" that includes a statistically valid number of reinspections.
The bill clarifies that policyholders may submit a uniform mitigation verification inspection form to their insurers for the purpose of determining premium discounts for wind insurance. Insurers must accept as valid the uniform mitigation verification forms certified by the Department of Financial Services or signed by a hurricane mitigation inspector.
