Officials bring in more help in probe of charter boat explosion on Lake Norman

Lincoln County fire officials have held off on issuing a preliminary report on the investigation of a fatal explosion and fire aboard a Lake Norman charter boat last month.

According to county fire marshal Mike Futrell, officials are awaiting the results of tests of the debris from the Championship II, which exploded and sank nearly three weeks ago, as well as reports from a number of agencies and insurance companies involved in the investigation.

However, Futrell said it could be another six to eight weeks before authorities are able to issue a report stating the chain of events and causes behind the June 10 explosion and fire aboard the 80-foot charter boat, one of the biggest operating on Lake Norman.
